By the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, I’ve taken on the work of making a list of the commands/laws of God, both direct and indirect. This came about after preparing and preaching the sermon, “Fulfill the LAW”. Please read the sermon, before reading this page. It will give the background needed before meditating on the law and obeying them.
- Procreate.
- Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. (Genesis 1:28)
- Be fruitful and multiply on the earth. (Genesis 8:17)
- Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. (Genesis 9:1)
- And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it. (Genesis 9:7)
- Eat plants & animals for food, but not with it’s blood.
- Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. (Genesis 1:29)
- Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. (Genesis 9:3)
- You shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. (Genesis 9:4)
- Keep the Sabbath Day Holy.
- So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. (Genesis 2:3)
- Don’t disobey God commands.
- You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. (Genesis 2:16)
- Man and Woman shall leave the house & become one.
- Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)
- Wives shall be submissive to Husband.
- Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you. (Genesis 3:16)
- Work for food.
- By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground. (Genesis 3:19)
- Do well and rule over sin.
- If you do well will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it. (Genesis 4:6)
- Do not kill another person.
- Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image. (Genesis 9:6)
- Do not take advantage of someone.
- And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside. (Genesis 9:22)
- Don’t expose someone at their lowest point, cover them.
- Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backwards and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father’s nakedness. (Genesis 9:23)
- We must not desire to be like God.
- Come, let us build for ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.
- Don’t touch another man’s wife, even on accident.
- And the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys and camels. But the LORD afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. (Genesis 12:16-17)
- But game to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife. (Genesis 20:3)
- Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would of brought guilt upon us.” (Genesis 26:10)
- Trust in the Lord & His promises.
- Fear not, Abram, I am your shield. (Genesis 15:1)
- And he believed the LORD and he counted it to him as righteousness. (Genesis 15:5)
- Live righteously. I am God Almighty, walk before me, and be blameless.(Genesis 17:1)
- Keep the covenant between God and Abraham.
- As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations. (Genesis 17:9)
- Circumcise male children and servants.
- Every male among you shall be circumcised. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring, both he who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money, shall surely be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant. Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he as broken my covenants. (Genesis 17:9-14)
- Trust in the Lord’s promises, even if it seems impossible, for they shall come to pass, even despite our disbelief.
- Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is hundred years old? (Genesis 17:17) I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this time next year. (Genesis 17:21) So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure? The LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?” (Genesis 18:12-13;)
- Command our children and household to keep the way of the LORD.
- For I have chosen him that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord. (Genesis 18:19a)
- Do righteouness & do justice.
- By doing righteousness and justice. (Genesis 18:19b) Justice is the UPHOLD the LAW.
- Do not join the wicked, no fear of God, who indulge the lust of the flesh.
- But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house, And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them. (Genesis 19:4-5)
- Obey the LORD’s warnings, some of them are of immediate consequences of life and death.
- “Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.” Genesis 19:17) But Lot’s wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. (Genesis 19:26)
- Trust & Obey the LORD, even if it means giving up your most prized possession.
- “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” (Genesis 22:2)
- “And in your offspring all the earth shall be blessed, because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statues, and my laws.” (Genesis 26:4-5)
- Don’t comfort yourself of jealousy by planning the death of another.
- “Behold, your brother Easu comforts himself about you by planning to kill you.” (Genesis 27:42)
- Give tithe to God.
- Jacob said, “And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.” (Genesis 28:22)
- Don’t eat of the sinew (tendon) of the thigh that is on the hip socket.
- Therefore to this day the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip on the sinew of the thigh.
- Don’t force someone to have sex.
- And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he seized her and lay with her and humiliated her. (Genesis 34:2)
- Now Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah. (Genesis 34:5)
- But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?” (Genesis 34:31)
- Don’t be jealous, for it leads to wickedness.
- And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind. (Genesis 37:11)
- They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him. (Genesis 37:18)
- Don’t be wicked.
- But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicket in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD put him to death. (Genesis 38:7)
- Don’t be lead by jealousy.
- But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his. So whenever he went in to his brother’s wife he would waste the semen on the ground, so as not to give offspring to his brother. (Genesis 38:9)
- Don’t be a hypocrite.
- Judar & Tamar – When Judah saw her, he though she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. He turned to her at the roadside and said, “Come, let me come in to you,” for he did not know she was his daughter-in-law. (Genesis 38:15) About three months later Judah was told, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has been immoral. Moreover, she is pregnant by immorality. And Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.” (Genesis 38:24) “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not know her again. (Genesis 38:26)
- Don’t touch another man’s wife, even if she tries to seduce you.
- Joseph and Potiphar’s wife – And after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “lie with me.” But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, because of me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my charge. He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except you, because you are his wife.” (Genesis 39:6-9)
- Trust in the Lord, even if everyone else doesn’t believe in the promises.
